Essential Activities in Translator-Interpreter Training

Abstract

The extremely fast pace of life, business and communications in our present world demands, more than ever before, the training of professionals in the field of translation and interpretation who are capable of successfully tackling a true mosaic of challenges in their linguistic and cultural endeavors, both in the field of written translation and in the field of interpreting or oral translation. It is not enough anymore to train a specialist by translating literary excerpts or hardly useful, outdated texts. It is of the essence to train specialists who can accurately translate and interpret in the fields of science and technology, health care, business, immigration, courts, media and other areas of great demand in today's fast-paced world. This article strives to illustrate what can be done in this respect, especially when it comes to training exercises and the creation of new translation-interpretation texts.

Frame-based interpretation of readers’ reception of the parallel translations

Frame theory is intended to serve as a tool for linguistic and psychological investigations. The latter two constitute what we call cognitive linguistics, where the psychological processes, which take place in the mind mainly in comprehension are explained within linguistic boundaries, and vice versa, where the linguistic utterances are observed as physical manifestations of brain work. The fact that pure linguistic knowledge is insufficient to entangle the intricacies of utterances and the units, which make them up, can easily be proved by computer analysis. What the machine cannot be taught is the interim knowledge, which only the human brain is capable of storing and handling. Only “real world knowledge, built up on the basis of experience […], makes it possible to infer” (MacLachlan & Reid 1994: 2) the message conveyed by texts, that is, stretches of written or oral utterances. The missing links, which are assumed by the text, need to be supplied by the receiver. “Narrative economy” (ibid. p. 2.) is the greatest requirement for the texts, which are written with the most condensed form of language—poems.

In the past there has been a tendency to perceive interpreting as an area of translation, but from the second half of the 20th century differentiation between the two areas has become necessary.

As supported by many researchers, translation and interpreting can be perceived as the process that allows the transfer of sense from one language to another, rather than the transfer of the linguistic meaning of each word.

Six Phases in Teaching Interpretation

Abstract
This article discusses six phases in teaching interpreting in a classroom atmosphere using semi-authentic and authentic teaching materials to bring the students close to both English and Indonesian real-life environments and exposed to different discourse genres and different English dialects and accents. Phases 1 and 2 are warm-up activities for preparing students to move up to phases 3 and 4. Up to this level students are exposed to a semi-real life situation where they are listening to different English native speaker dialects and non-native speaker accents through the prepared tapes/CDs and VCDs and they are also listening to different Indonesian discourse genres. The last two phases are the most challenging ones for the students because each student will demonstrate his/her strategies and capabilities in performing an interpreting work in a set-up real-life situation using electronic devices.

Interpreting and Transcribing

The transcription and interpreting of foreign language tape recordings is one of the duties included in the scope of the work done by legal interpreters.  It is difficult work as it is extremely time consuming, it requires serious concentration and the source tape is often of questionable quality. I have loved this work ever since over 16 years ago I was handed my first whisper-ridden, undercover tape with the audio quality of a 1930’s Victrola phonograph record.  I have since completed hundreds of hours of tapes; both audio and video and serve as an expert witness on translated tape transcript quality.  But I am continuously striving to enlighten our clients on the need for audio quality guidelines.

The President of Brazil visited Africa in early November 2003 and made certain statements during his stay in that continent. The contents of the statements themselves need not concern us: he did not talk about translation and this is not the Poughkeepsie Review of International Politics.

An interpreter translated what he said and that concerns us, because this, as you very well know, is the Translation Journal. Whether interpretation is a species of translation or a sister discipline may be a matter of some dispute in certain quarters, but I daresay both activities are very close kin, and interpretation of Presidential speeches is news fit for the Translation Journal to publish. If it is not, the publisher will deal with this article in the appropriate manner.

Companies with fledgling export departments may, understandably, have very limited experience of the languages industry. This basic guide to interpreting provides an overview of the difference between translation and interpreting, and looks briefly at the different types of interpreter which they commercial organisations may need to call upon for conferences, foreign visits and meetings.

Interpreting the differences

There is a tendency for people who aren't involved in the language industry to use the terms "interpreting" and "translating" as if the two were one and the same thing, and yet there is a very fundamental difference which divides these two linguistic disciplines. Granted both are processes whereby one language is transferred into another, and both require a high degree of understanding in the two languages in question. However, interpreting involves the spoken word and is thus a faster and more immediate transfer process whilst translation describes the written process of transferring one language into another, usually entailing a slower and more considered approach.
